BOUTIQUE TARGETS UNEXPECTED CUSTOMERS: MEN

There’s finally help for men unable to define “crop top,” “camisole” and “Boho-chic.”

For many modern males, the words aren’t necessary vocabulary additions. Unless, of course, the holidays have arrived and you’re shopping for a wife or girlfriend.

That’s why Apricot Lane, a women’s clothing boutique at Folsom’s Palladio at Broadstone, will host its first “men’s night” tonight. It’s designed to help men navigate the process of buying clothing gifts for women. And yes, snacks will be provided.

But the food assortment will be slightly different than what you might see at events geared toward women at the store, according to manager and buyer Sasha Nunley. Chocolate helps women shop. Men might prefer potato chips, Nunley said.

A promise of salty snacks isn’t the only thing lessening male shoppers’ chances of a shirtdress-induced panic attack. Conveniently, Apricot Lane has provided a printable wish list in which women can specify their sizes and favorite brands.

Nunley said some men enter her store with many gift ideas. “Other men kind of need a little more help,” she said.

Does the hand-holding take some of the spontaneity out of exchanging gifts? Is it better to leave things to chance and accept a present that’s ill-fitting, yet selected without direction? We don’t know. Much like faux leather leggings, those questions are a matter of personal taste.

Tonight’s event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. While it’s geared toward men, women will be allowed in the store as well. Vacaville-based Apricot Lane has stores in 29 states. Folsom is the company’s only Sacramento-area location.

ALASKA FRANCHISES: SUCCESS STORY

Apricot Lane—Ann Marie Valdez  logo When Ann Marie Valdez walked into an Apricot Lane clothing boutique at Downtown Disney in Anaheim, California, she was immediately smitten. Apricot Lane is a women’s wear chain that features trendy designer clothing and celebrity-inspired fashion. Valdez noticed a few placards around the store that mentioned franchise opportunities. It was just what she and her husband, Arne, a salesman, had been looking for. “I still have the original piece of paper,” she says of the moment more than three years ago. “I was immediately super-excited. My husband and I had been investigating franchise opportunities for years.” The couple, who have two teenagers, wanted a business that would work in Anchorage, where the couple has lived for twenty years. “We were looking for something I could run and could kind of be my thing,” Valdez says, noting she had been a stay-at-home mom for years. Her teenaged daughter is a big supporter. “I don’t have a lot of experience in the fashion industry,” she says, although when she was younger she did some modeling in the Seattle area and worked at a Limited clothing store. The Valdezes settled on a location in the Fifth Avenue Mall in Downtown Anchorage. “The demographics and anchor stores here in Fifth Avenue were more along the lines of my customers,” she says. “I’m a ‘mom and daughter’ shopping together store.” The store also hosts fashion shows and trunk parties. Apricot Lane sells mostly brand-name items, but it’s not a high-end boutique as far as prices are concerned, Valdez says. “Our price points are really good. We try to cater to the mothers and the daughters, but our demographics are pretty wide-ranging—eighteen to fifties and sixties.” JULIE STRICKER IS A JOURNALIST LIVING NEAR FAIRBANKS. New Apricot Lane Boutique in Mount Pleasant Featured in Moultrie News

Mt Pleasant Interior 31 Apricot Lane Boutique has opened in Mount Pleasant at Towne Centre. Locally owned by Mount Pleasant residents Robert and Sandra Barnes, the store will feature apparel, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and accessories to create must-have high-fashion looks for an affordable price. Featuring the most sought after styles, the boutique caters to both mothers and daughters, in their teens and their 50s looking for cutting edge styles. The store is the second located in the state. This new store will not only cater to mothers and daughters, but customers will find themselves being styled by a mother and daughter dynamic duo as Barnes’ own daughter, Ashley Herrin, will be working along side her in the store. A true family-run business, Barnes also has plans to open other franchises in the area to add to the local growth of the retail business in the area. “We are so excited to open Apricot Lane in our town as we know there are many places to choose from already, but none that bring fashion-forward looks at affordable prices and in limited quantities - unlike the larger retail chains. The females that shop with us will have a sense of uniqueness when making a purchase, as there will only be about six of each item in our store with no back stock inventory to refill the floor with the same item,” the Barnes said. Apricot Lane also seeks out any opportunity to do good in the local community. In store, Apricot Lane features brands such as 3Strands, which donates 100 percent of profits to empower, educate and employ young women who have been rescued from sex trafficking, and brands such as Emi Jay, HOME T’s, Good Works and more that donate a portion of each sale to a good cause. Just as Apricot Lane Boutiques are known to keep up with the most stylish trends, they are also on top of one of the newest crazes to hit the fashion scene: fashion parties. Apricot Lane Boutique offers clients a chance to have their own “Girls Night Out” at the boutique, with the store handling the details from coordinating the invitations to the planning of refreshments and snacks. Apricot Lane encourages hosts to bring ten to fifteen guests to the fashion parties. Groups can be made up of co-workers, mothers and daughters, young mothers looking to escape from the kids for a few hours, as well as charity groups, schools or sports teams. The store can offer incentives to donate a portion of sales back to the cause of choice. The Barnes offer the hostess 50 percent off any one item in the boutique, 20 percent off all remaining items and gift card incentives for bringing a certain number of guests. All attendees also receive 20 percent off everything in the store during the party. Apricot Lane Mount Pleasant promises to embody all the characteristics that appeal to shoppers: a great selection of apparel and accessories, a warm and welcoming environment, and genuine, honest customer service and style advice. Whether you’re looking for a great pair of jeans to create a casual look, or a classy outfit to enjoy a night out on the town, Apricot Lane has the brands and accessories to express your style. Apricot Lane is a member of the popular Country Visions, Inc. franchise, specializing in offering a high variety of fashion-forward styles, accessories and gift items at affordable prices. The franchise offers a new mix of merchandise both online and in-store, and offers customers the ability to build a unique style. Approaching system wide sales of $50 million and growing at a pace of 20-30 stores per year provides new resources and opportunities system-wide that will keep Apricot Lane Boutique on top as a fashion trend leader and top retail franchise.
